Use of steel slag for carbon dioxide capture and utilisation

2019
Carbon dioxide sequestration via mineral carbonation of steel slags combines two waste products to produce value-added products such as precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC). A systematic study of slag characterisation and its dissolution characteristics in acidic media has been carried out to understand leaching mechanism and model dissolution kinetics, to improve slag utilisation, and bring down the cost of carbon dioxide sequestration and PCC production. The thesis proposes an alternative to pH-Swing for impurity removal, demonstrates the existence of stable calcium carbonate supersaturation and non-passivating dissolution front during pressure-swing carbonation and establishes the role of RO phase sporulation on dissolution characteristics.
