New Fossil Remains of Stegodon bombifrons (Proboscideans) from the Pinjor Stage Soan Formation of Pakistan

The specimen described and figured here is fragmentary cranium of right and left maxillary molars. The specimen is collected from Jari Kas, Mirpur, AJK, Pakistan. The genus Stegodon is characterized by its low crowned teeth meant for browsing habit. The earliest chronological record of the genus is from the Late Miocene (6.5-6.2Ma) of Pakistan. The genus flourished towards Middle and Late Pliocene, and its records are known from Java, China and Japan. It survived till late Pleistocene and chronologically the latest record is from China. Stegodon bombifrons has been regarded as the most primitive species of the genus.
