Fast beam injection and ejection method using a short-pulsed septum magnet for hadron accelerators
2011
Abstract Septum systems are the most important devices for beam injection and extraction in circular particle accelerators. Because of the high-field requirements with a thin septum structure, septa have major problems with heating and cooling of coils and there is a possibility that a mechanical breakdown of coils occurs due to magnetic forces in a pulsed operation. These problems are exacerbated by the long pulse excitation of large inductance magnets because of their multi-turn coils for high-field production, keeping a flat top accuracy of less than 0.1%. Recently the pulsed field techniques of fast rise and field higher than 0.5 T have been realized in the study field of kicker magnet systems, which can be used to solve the above-mentioned problems. This paper focuses on fast beam injection/ejection methods by using a short-pulsed septum magnet.
