A Ringfort at Ballybrit, Co. Galway

In the remainder of the ringfort, which is undisturbed, there are traces of a rectangular house measuring approximately 12 metres by 6.5 metres; it lies slightly west of centre, its long axis being east-west. East of the house a segment of the ringfort is delimited by a Y-shaped earthen bank averaging approximately 2 metres in width and 50 cms. in height. In the south western quadrant various slight surface irregularities (not shown on plan) indicate the possibility of structural remains, and immediately outside the bank on the south there are the apparent remains of a sub-rectangular structure some 5 metres in maximum internal width. It is in this southern area that the bank of the ringfort is widest, averaging 10 metres in width. At no point in its circumference is there any evident entrance. Some 25 metres west of the ringfort lay a low earthwork, somewhat semi-circular
