CHARACTERIZATION OF OKRA SEEDS OF PROMISING GENOTYPES ON THE BASIS OF PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

2012
Seeds of nineteen selected genetically diverse okra strains were evaluated for physical characteristics. Properties of materials play crux role in the development of any processing and handling equipments. Through present study efforts were made to find out variability and relationship between seeds of various economically important traits of okra. The seeds of okra cultivars having moisture content in the range of 8.13 to 12.27% (DWB) were assessed for dimensional, gravimetric and frictional properties. Dimensional comparisons showed that the seeds of Arka Anamika were biggest and KS-442 as smallest in size. The properties such as sphericity, porosity, aspect ratio, angle of repose and coefficient of static friction differ significantly and dependent on genotype, which has paved the way for dimensional quality characterization through image analysis of selected seeds of okra cultivars. Accordingly the dominating similar prominent physical characters formed separate place as coherent clusters.
