Long term variability study of Blazar 3EGJ1614+3424 utilizing 5 year Fermi Observations

2013
Blazar is a class of Active Galaxies which shows high luminosity and rapid variability across the electromagnetic spectrum, especially in the gamma-ray wavelength. Based on strength of optical emission line they are further classified into two groups: Flat spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and BL Lacs. Blazars show variability in g -rays over different time-scales ranging from flares as short as 1 h to flares extending for days, months or years. It is not clear whether the very long term ( 10 yr) variations are similar to that of short term variability or if they are an intrinsically different phenomena. In a recent work Bhattacharya et. al. (2013) examined the long term variability of Fermi detected EGRET blazars. They compared the five year averaged EGRET observations to that of two years of Fermi observations and found that 6 FSRQs showed large (more than a factor of 10) long term variability. Fermi has been observing these sources for more than five years and provides a unique opportunity to study the long term variability of blazars. In this work we study the long term variability 3EG J1614+3424, which is one of the six FSRQs of Bhattacharya et al. (2013), utilizing five years of Fermi observations.
