Performance of large liquid scintillation counters

1963
In a systematic study of the performance of large scintillators, a container in the form of a rectangular parallelepiped with the larger surface st run. Concent 2 m/sup 2/ and with a thickness for the liquid of 14 cm was used. The counter was placed between two telescope counters of 10 x 10 cm/sup 2/ in a beam of relativistic mesons. The counter pulses were displayed on a kicksorter gated by a coincidence between the telescope counters. Uniformity curves were obtained by moving the counter. The following factors are considered. (1) fraction of container surface covered with photocathode, (2) reflectivity of the container surface, (3) absorption length of scintillation liquids, and (4) geometry of the photomultiplier arrangement.
