Parameter estimation and sensitivity analysis of distribution network equivalents

2016
With the growth of renewable energy sources, distributed generators and smart grid functionality; distribution networks are transitioning towards more active networks. Considering the computational effort for the detailed network modelling of such active distribution networks, there is a requirement for appropriate dynamic equivalent models. This paper presents the parameter estimation procedure and characteristic equations of the proposed Engineering Recommendation G.74 standard compliant distribution system equivalent model for establishing a generic range and to simplify the output calculation of the equivalent model if the system condition varies from the base case. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis was performed using simplified Sobol method to identify the key parameters in order to include them in the Transmission System Operator-Distribution System Operator data exchange process. All the results are provided after rigorous analysis at selected substations across a range of operating conditions and network configurations of the full Great Britain transmission system model as operated by National Grid with the presence of the proposed distribution system equivalent models.
