School Leadership in Light of the Critical Questions of Schooling

2018
School and system leaders face many dilemmas in their decision-making role on a daily basis. They have to deal with multiple complexities with the potential to impact significantly their communities. There is a lack of literature on how school leadership can be aligned with the purpose in dealing with the new world challenges on school systems including those mentioned in Jones and Millar (2010) as well as the spillover effects of war, terrorism, and natural disasters. This paper argues that a new conceptualization of school leadership is needed which reflects changing dynamics of school leadership, evolving understandings of the purpose of schooling, and massive global challenges which confront schools and school systems. Ultimately, this paper contends that schooling is about preparing intelligent citizens capable of facing new challenges and critically solving complex problems. School and system leaders ought then to be trained to be ethical, critical, and eager to value human beings in a more socially just world.
