In vitro study of antimicrobial activity of Ethanolic extract of Phanera vahlii

2014
The aim of the present study was to explore the antibacterial potential of ethanolic extract of phanera vahlii (Family: Fabaceae) by invitro assay method using agar diffusion method.. Ethanolic leaf extract of phanera vahlii at doses of 150mg/ml and 300mg/ml exhibited significant antimicrobial activity and Gentamicin as reference standard at the concentration of 25μg/ml . The antifungal activity was evaluated by using Sabouraud dextrose agar well diffusion method .The diameter of the zone of inhibition against various gram positive and gram negative bacteria of Ethanolic leaf extract of phanera vahlii was measured and exhibited excellent inhibition on the growth against staphylococcus aureus( gram positive ) and Escherichia coli ( gram negative ) Candida albicans(fungus). The observed activity may be due to the presence of phytochemicals like glycosides, tannins, flavanoids, ketones, sterols, oentacyclic triterpenes and triterpenoids present in plant extract.
