Evaluating 980GEN-3 Steel with Tested and Numerical Forming Limit Curves

2021
Forming limit curves (FLC) are widely accepted by industry for predicting necking failure during sheet metal forming. FLCs can be developed directly through material testing or by numerical extrapolation from tensile data. This work evaluates the accuracy of FLCs developed from Nakajima testing using the linear-best-fit method to Keeler, Arcelor V9, and Tata Steel FLC models that are available in the commercial FEM software. Two different stamping shapes and three variations of 980GEN-3 steel were used for physical testing to evaluate the FLC models.
