ISA - FROM FIELD TRIALS TO REALITY

2004
This paper describes the development worldwide of ISA (Intelligent Speed Adaptation) technology. The in-vehicle technology recognises the correct permitted speed for a road and can be used either to inform or warn the driver or to control vehicle speed. ISA developed from an original French design in 1982 throughout European countries and worldwide. Some countries are already equipping newly manufactured vehicles with the system as trial projects. ISA technology requires knowledge of position, through a global positioning system navigation facility; knowledge of speed limits for all roads, available on a digital road map; and the ability to control the drivetrain of the vehicle. Car manufacturers have shown interest and are starting to feature elements of ISA technology. For the covering abstract see ITRD E121172.
