Comparative Study Between Hartley and Colpitts VCO for 5G MM-Wave Band Applications

2019
This paper presents a comparative study between Hartley and Colpitts voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) in 5G mm-wave band. Both VCOs are designed using Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit (MMIC) technology using PH15 process from UMS foundry. Simulation results showed that Hartley VCO is less efficient than Colpitts VCO; it has a bandwidth of 1.85 GHz, a phase noise about -106.9 dBc/Hz at 1MHz frequency offset and a Figure of merit of -155.78 dBc/Hz, while the Colpitts VCO has a bandwidth of 2.25 GHz, a phase noise of -113.073 dBc/Hz at 1MHz frequency offset and a Figure of merit of -172.89 dBc/Hz.
