The challenges of welding mixed materials with Nd:YAG lasers

2003
In the specialized field of industrial manufacturing an increased use of application and function oriented materials can be recorded. Not only more and more materials with particular characteristics are being used, but also combinations of materials with the most diverse composition of alloys. The problems which develop in the field of welding engineering processing is above all characterized by the metallurgical challenges, for which classical fusion welding processes frequently cannot provide a solution. Experiences from applications development manifest, that the pulsed Nd:YAG laser by means of new possible process techniques is suitable for welding many materials and material combinations, which are demanding with respect to process engineering and metallurgy. The extension of the application possibilities with regard to such welding of demanding materials and material combinations is to be illustrated on the basis of practical application examples. In the specialized field of industrial manufacturing an increased use of application and function oriented materials can be recorded.
