The True Face of Better Regulation Regarding Environmental Policy

2015
The EU has been playing a key role in carving out since the 70s an ambitious environmental policy ranging from biodiversity to renewables. Needless to say that such a policy has always been embroiled with controversies given the sheer nature of the environmental crisis. In proposing legislations to the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers, the European Commission - a somewhat technocratic executive - is endowed with significant powers in determining what matter and when to regulate. The new Commission headed by Mr J.Cl. Juncker took office on 1st November 2014. It immediately decided to repeal legislative initiatives on waste management and clean air policy. 17 leading environmental professors - among whom one UiO professor and a former UiO professor - belonging to the Avosetta group criticize this attempt to undermine European environmental legislation.
