The agro-industrial chain approach allows for the understanding of the adoption of innovations in the production system, particularly the adoption of information technology. Eletronic identification of animals and traceability in the beef production chain, for example, are adopted as a way to introduced reliable data of farm in the data system of the chain. This is an important achievement and improves planning and co-ordination of agents. Pay-off of these technologies have the following determinants: (a) the possibility to increase beef price due to improvements in quality; and (b) efficiency gains due to management (informational technology used as a management tool). Eletronic identification and traceability allows for informatization of the system, which is extremely important to improve the process management.
