Acoustic-emission method for determination of energy of heavy charged particles

1992
In the zone of interaction of high-energy particles with target material, the energy released results in the formation of a field of thermoelastic dynamic stresses, which are relieved by the emission of acoustic waves from the excitation zone. We have developed a method for determination of the energy of heavy charged particles that is based on recording of the acoustic radiation generated when a particle beam interacts with the target material by means of an ultrasonic detector located on the rear surface of the target. Since heavy charged particles lose most of their energy at the end of the path, the charged-particle path R in the target is determined by the time interval {Delta}T between the leading edges of the accelerator`s current pulse and the acoustic signal from the detector. 4 refs., 1 fig.
