Complementary Radiofrequency and Visible Light Systems for Indoor and Vehicular Communications

The area of wireless communications is facing major transformations as the mobile communication is transitioning to the fifth-generation technology while local area networks to the sixth-generation of Wi-Fi. In this paper, the status and complementarity of radiofrequency and light communications systems are discussed in the context of indoor and vehicular applications. This analysis points out that significant research is already focusing on the next generation communication paradigm in which cooperation between various technologies in a hybrid platform is foreseen as solutions to the increasing demands and requirements from human users and internet of things. A special attention is given to the vehicular communication as part of improving car safety and driver assistance.
