Career-and family-related preferences and expectations of college students : Some inter-gender and inter-ethnic comparisons

1996
This study seeks to explore inter-gender and inter-ethnic differences in college students' career and family life preferences, expectations, and aspirations within a cumulative disadvantage context. It focuses on a representative sample of 301 undergraduates. Career-related choices and preferences are probed asking students about their plans immediatly following graduation, whether or not they expect to find a suitable job in the short run, where they expect to spend most of their career, whether or not they are confident about finding an ideal job in the long run, and whether or not they expect to end up in a line of work different from the training they are receiving in college. Family-life choices and preferences are examined asking specfic questions about marriage, children, divorce, and willingness to sacrifice career for the sake of a happy marriage
