HOW MARYLAND USES ADVANCED ITS

This article describes the use of ITS by the Maryland State Highways Administration to monitor traffic conditions and to issue travel advisories. CHART (Coordinated Highways Action Response Team), the system in use, has significantly improved the ability of the state to keep track of traffic along 550 miles of busy highways. A new system, CHART II, is being developed to operate as a hub and satellite system with a Statewide Operations Center (SOC) in Hanover supported by numerous local Traffic Operations Centers.
