A variational PWP method for measuring space charge distributions in real EHV cables

Because of the inherent defects in the examining system, the study on the space charge distributions in the full-size HVDC cables is still a challenge. In this paper, a new measurement system, designed on the basis of modified PWP method, was developed for measuring space charge distributions in real long HVDC cable. In order to check this measurement system, space charge distributions in the real HVDC cable samples with 3.5–10mm thick insulation were measured. The theoretically reasonable results have showed the possibilities of using this method to perform measurement on the full-size cables.
