Differential upregulation ofintercellular adhesion molecule-1 incoeliac disease

SUMMARY Theexpression ofintercellular adhesion molecule-l (ICAM-1) was studied on peroral jejunal biopsies frompatients withcoeliac disease. Thebiopsies fromuntreated patients exhibited greater staining ofthesuperficial lamina propria cells compared withtreated patients andcontrols. A gluten challenge intreated patients produced analtered staining pattern within 2h.Theresults demonstrate therole ofICAM-1 expression incoeliac disease, providing further evidence fortheroleoflamina propria cells inthepathogenesis ofthis condition.
