John R. Winckler (1916–2001)

John R. (Jack) Winckler, a professor emeritus of physics at the University of Minnesota, died of natural causes in February 2001. He was 84 years old and had been an AGU member since 1958. Winckler, who belonged to the SPA section, was a true pioneer in space and upper atmospheric physics. Many of his discoveries were instrumental in starting areas of research that are thriving today.
