THE INTELLIGENT VEHICLE-HIGHWAY SYSTEMS PROGRAM IN THE UNITED STATES

There continues to be a great deal of interest and support for the Intelligent Vehicle-Highway Systems (IVHS) program in the U.S. This has translated to the initiation of a number of very important program activities that may lead to deployment of IVHS services. The public/private partnership embodied in IVHS AMERICA has been very successful in establishing a solid foundation for the program and in garnering support from corporate and government leaders. Both the previous and new presidential administrations have been enthusiastic supporters. This paper summarizes current IVHS program activities. It attempts to paint a broad picture that depicts the whole of the IVHS and show how it is aimed at achieving the expected public benefits through deployment.
