FTIR SPECTROSCOPIC STUDY OF INTERCALATED KAOLINITE

1997
Abstract The intercalation complex of an ordered kaolinite with caesium acetate was studied by diffuse reflectance FTIR spectrometry. Since the direct investigation of the hydroxyl stretching region of the complex is not possible due to the strongly hygroscopic nature of the intercalated caesium acetate, a method has been proposed for the reliable analysis of the OH region after rehydration of the partially dehydrated complex over D 2 O. The frequency decrease and the broadening of the 3620 cm −1 band in the resolved spectrum show the effect of the Cs + cation sitting above the dioctahedral vacancy.
