A psychoanalytically informed approach to the treatment of schizophrenia based on coordinating community resources and understanding transference

This paper describes the success of psychodynamically informed work with a schizo- phrenic woman after other treatment, including medication, family crisis intervention, repetitive hospitalizations, and electroconvulsive therapy, had failed to produce signif- icant results. In this case, psychoanalytic knowledge helped to integrate the requisite multi-modal treatment and provided the necessary containment for an evolution in the patient's transference positions so that she could individuate from her family and make a better adaptation to the world in which she lived.
