Implementation of a Co-Driver for Continuous Support

2012
In the interactIVe integrated project, a “Continuous Support” (CS) function is developed to assist the driver in many different traffic situations and scenarios. The CS function is a deep integration of many Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). The demonstrator vehicle developed by “Centro Ricerche Fiat” implements this function by means of interactions between the driver and an artificial co–driver. The basic metaphor idea defines the system as a sentient co–driver, which is usually silent but can advise the driver or even intervene when a dangerous situation occurs. Communications between driver and co–driver occur at different levels – from analog to digital – through multiple channels with extensive use of haptic feedbacks and interaction on driver commands. This paper describes the implementation and the early results.
