Kinross' Rio Paracatu Mineracao (RPM) mining and milling optimisation of the existing and new SAG mill circuit

2006
Kinross’ Rio Paracatu Mineracao (RPM) operation in Brazil and Metso Minerals Process Technology (Asia-Pacific) (MMPT-AP) have developed a comprehensive model for optimising throughput and plant performance at the Rio Paracatu operation. The model is based on mechanistic models of blast fragmentation, crushing, milling, and classification. The inputs to the model are the proportions and main characteristics of the defined ore domains (e.g. Rock Quality Designation (RQD), Point Load Index (PLI), Bond Work Index, lithology, design and operating conditions). The model was used for optimisation of the existing mining and milling processes and for the study of the impact of drilling and blasting on the new RPM grinding circuit, which includes the introduction of a 38ft SAG mill.
