Economic analysis of the Salmonid supply chain

The purpose of this paper is to describe the Salmonid sector using the supply chain model to understand the economic and functional relations among the enterprises that operate at different levels of this chain. The research is developed as it follows: the first part is dedicated to overview the EU aquaculture sector, one of the fastest growing food sectors; the second part is dedicated to give information about the economic performance and profit redistribution among the various stakeholders of the fishery industry. The third part describes the structure of the supply chain and its role in the economic performance. The fourth part illustrates the results against a backdrop of strength and weakness points of the sector. Finally it is suggested a strategy to improve the economic performance of the chain focused on small enterprises that beside representing the majority in number show competitive handicaps due to their size and financial restrictions.
