Developmentally Appropriate Pedagogy and Inclusion: "Don't Put the Cart before the Horse!".

1999
The continuum of students in our physical education classes include a  diversified skill level, from gifted motorically to severe motoric disabilities, with the majority of students falling somewhere in the center of the continuum between the two extremes. What do we do when a child is having difficulty performing a skill? Do we treat that child generically or do we step back and dissect the scenario to identify the root of the problem for that child? If physical educators are to be held accountablefor creating an effective and efficient learning environment that promotes the joy of movement, then  Developmentally Appropriate Pedagogy is the first building block for  multidimensional physical education. As the evolution of Developmentally Appropriate Pedagogy continues to unfold, it is time to clarify how the infusion of Developmentally Appropriate Pedagogy is a prerequisite to the successful inclusion of all individuals, regardless of motoric diversity.
