Environmental and economic analysis of waste management scenarios for a warship in life cycle perspective

2020
Warships are excluded from all international environmental regulations. This study seeks for an answer what the result will be if warships must obey these regulations. The functional unit is described as the total domestic and some of the maintenance wastes of a warship during 1-year period. The wastes consist of 3.3 t of glass, 755.9 t of paper, 875 t of plastic, 76 t of metal. Besides, 4.3 t of other types of wastes. While Scenario1 and Scenario2 accept that all the wastes are sent to landfill and incineration, respectively, Scenario3 and Scenario4 accept that all the recyclable materials are recycled and the rest of them are sent to landfill and incineration. These scenarios were evaluated via SimaPro 8.0.2 LCA program and ReCiPe 2008 Version 1.09 method. It is concluded that Scenario3 has the least impact for human health (0.09 DALY), ecosystems (0.0003 species year) and resources ($ 1124). Scenario2 has the worst values for human health (68 DALY), ecosystems (0.083 species·year) and resources ($ 335,040). The total social cost of emissions is 147,930 € for Scenario3. On the other hand, the cost of Scenario2 is 931,638 €.
