Atomic trapping in a two-dimensional magneto-optical trap
1996
We could trap rubidium atoms in two-dimensional configuration using two pairs of counterpropagating laser beams in a magneto-optical trap. The trapped atomic cloud was line-shape of 10-mm long and /spl sim/1.5 mm in diameter along the crossing of the laser beams. The probe-beam absorption spectrum was observed and from which the number of trapped atoms was estimated to be about 1/spl times/10/sup 6/.
