The Stereoscopic Camera Unit

2012
This chapter covers everything you need to know about putting together a stereoscopic camera unit, or a 3D rig. Functions and features are discussed, including mechanical and dynamic controls, and image analysis and geometry, as well as what to look for when evaluating a 3D TV vendor. The pros and cons of side-by-side vs. mirror rigs are laid out, and the role of half-mirrors, beam splitters explained. The requirements for filming in 3D are detailed, from genlock and mechanical design to digital out and global or rolling shutters. Specific cameras and their uses are analyzed: broadcast and digital cinema; prosumer and DSLRs; 2D cameras designed for 3D; silicon imaging; and 3D camcorders. The chapter concludes with a discussion of 3D lenses for 2D cameras.
