Mechanical and thermal properties of artificial stone finishing materials mixed with PCM impregnated lightweight aggregate and carbon material

2021
Abstract In this study, lightweight aggregates and carbon materials were impregnated with a phase change material (PCM) to improve the thermal performance of artificial stone used as an interior finishing material. The PCM used was n-octadecane; the carbon materials used in the mixture were exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets, activated carbon, and biochar. The compressive strength was slightly lower in the specimens with PCM; it was found that PCM can affect the adhesion of the cement paste and aggregate. When carbon materials are used in the mixtures, the thermal conductivity is improved. Depending on the type and amount of carbon material added, the thermal conductivity can be improved and the peak temperature adjusted. The combination of PCM and carbon materials allows for high latent heat capacity, efficient use of thermal energy through efficient storage and release, sustainable thermal stability and durability, and peak temperature control.
