The methods of γ spectra denoising

2004
We discuss the γ spectra denoising methods. A kind of denoising method based on Wavelet Transform is presented. This method uses Wavelet Transform to separate the γ spectrum from γ spectra measured in experiments are intrinsically contaminated with noises--fluctuations. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of γ spectra increases with the increment of total counts. In the case of small count rate and short measuring time, however, the total counts of γ spectra are not large enough to reduce the statistical uncertainty, thus the SNR may not satisfy our need in γ spectra analysis. In order to improve the SNR of γ spectra, we generally use some denoising methods to filter the fluctuations. In this article, we will discuss some common denoising methods, then present a denoising method based on Wavelet Transform. This method improves the SNR of γ spectra with no distortion to their shape that usually happens in the filtering procedure when using common denoising methods.
