Degradation Study of Gentamicin by UV Spectroscopy

2014
Gentamicin is an antibiotic from the class aminoglycoside having a broad spectrum activity. It is a bactericidal agent which is used to treat and prevent mycobacterial, enterococcal and severe Gram-negative bacterial infections. Degradation is a main problem in numerous unstable products. The forced degradation studies on drug substance involves photo Acid/base Stress testing, photo degradation, Temperature and or with humidity, Time, pH variation (low and high). In our recent research we study degradation parameters on gentamicin, for this we performed stress testing procedures on it. When gentamicin subjected to 0.1 N HCl and 0.1N NaOH, gentamicin showed increased availability. When gentamicin exposed to heat and U.V light (at wavelength max 243nm) for 30 minutes, deccreased availability was observed and in case of heating and it shown extremely decreased availability.
