Microvascular peculiarities of the anterior vaginal wall - correlates to a `G-spot`?

2016
Ever since its existence was suggested in the 1940s, the G-spot remains a controversial topic among anatomists, gynecologists, and sexual medicine specialists. The reports about this putative highly erogenous zone contain vague data, mostly based on self-report, while anatomical evidence about the essence of the zone remains far from conclusive. The present study aims a clarification of microscopical structure of the zone, widely believed to contain the G-spot.We investigated histological structure of the anterior vaginal wall, focusing on the zone between the distal and medial third, which is thought to contain the G-spot. This was achieved via routine H&E preparation and immunohistochemical staining for S-100 protein. The results were compared with control areas from the posterior vaginal wall. The microscopic examination revealed a characteristic feature of the anterior vaginal wall - the multiple presence of a repeating structure, consisting of one thick-walled arteriole-like vessel, surrounded by venous tortuosities. It was observed in the lamina propria, extremely close and sometimes interweaved in the smooth muscle fibers of the tunica muscularis. Such vascular structure was closely associated with a peripheral nerve fiber, running in a parallel direction. However, no classical neurovascular bundle was formed. Our present findings suggest specific morphological characteristics of the anterior vaginal wall. Although we could not confirm the presence of a discrete anatomical structure, our data show features, which might correlate with the proposed functional uniqueness of the G-spot.
