Suppression of moving conductors by a magnetic field

1990
In order to understand the suppression effect of convection by a magnetic field in melt growth, analog simulation experiments were made. Decay in the rotation of simulators, brass tops and a mercury top, was observed under various types and strength of magnetic field. The circulation of induced current was proved to be essential to promote the brake effect. The brake efficiency of the tops can be estimated basically by applying simple electromagnetic theory and by assuming that induced current circulates cylindrically.
