Study on Short-Circuit Current Performance of ±500kV DC Transmission Line Surge Arrester

2019
In order to study the pressure release capability of $\pm 500 \ \mathbf{kV}$ DC transmission line surge arrester after short-circuit fault, $\pm 500 \ \mathbf{kV}$ Yichang-Shanghai line was taken as the engineering background to calculate the short-circuit current that may occur in the whole line. The surge arrester short-circuit current test device was built. At the same time, pressure release structure and mechanical performance of surge arrester were analyzed. Finally, the high and low short-circuit current performance tests were carried out. The results show that the maximum and minimum short-circuit currents along the $\pm 500 \ \mathbf{kV}$ DC transmission line are about 18 kA and 5 kA. According to the short-circuit current series specified in IEC 60099–4, the surge arrester needs to withstand short-circuit currents are 50 kA and 800 A, respectively. The designed pressure release structure with a waist groove type can release the short-circuit fault energy effectively. It is verified that the short-circuit current performance of the surge arrester can meet the technical requirements of $\pm 500 \ \mathbf{kV}$ DC transmission project.
