Every drilling engineer's primary goal should be to drill each well efficiently and safely. Because of the nonstop nature of the business and the fact that conditions continually change, the on-site drilling engineer has a demanding job. To cope with it successfully an engineer needs certain attributes. One must have a high level of technical and practical expertise, accurately assess the conditions that exist, quickly make proper decisions based on those conditions, and effectively manage time, people, and machinery. Some of the techniques that, according to the author, have proven to be most effective in developing these qualities are discussed.
