ECO-PESA: AN EVALUATION OF A COMPLEMENTARY CURRENCY PROGRAMME IN KENYA'S INFORMAL SETTLEMENTS

The ð aim ð of ð the ð Eco�괂ĠPesa ð programme ð was ð to ð promote ð and ð facilitate ð environmental ð social ð service ð work ð and ð economic ð development ð in ð impoverished ð informal ð settlements ð (slums) ð through ð the ð innovative ð use ð of ð a ð complementary ð currency. ð This ð complementary ð currency, ð called ð Eco�괂ĠPesa, ð was ð backed ð by ð the ð national ð currency ð and ð introduced ð through ð the ð registration ð of ð 75 ð small ð local ð businesses, ð price ð discounting, ð community ð service ð work, ð and ð community ð events ð in ð three ð neigh�괂Ġ bouring ð informal ð settlements ð in ð Kongowea, ð Kenya. ð An ð estimated ð $4,176 ð USD ð worth ð of ð trading ð was ð facilitated ð through ð the ð circulation ð of ð only ð $352 ð USD ð worth ð of ð Eco�괂ĠPesa. ð The ð use ð of ð Eco�괂ĠPesa ð resulted ð in ð a ð 22% ð average ð increase ð in ð participating ð businesses' ð incomes, ð the ð collection ð of ð 20 ð tonnes ð of ð waste, ð and ð the ð creation ð of ð three ð youth�괂Ġled ð community ð tree ð nurseries. ð The ð programme ð was ð cost ð effective ð (only ð $4,698 ð USD ð was ð spent ð over ð seven ð months), ð and ð provided ð an ð improved ð mechanism ð for ð tracking ð development ð funding ð and ð increasing ð overall ð accountability. ð This ð paper ð presents ð a ð study ð of ð the ð programme, ð describing ð seven ð months ð of ð design, ð implementation ð and ð results. ð The ð successes ð of ð the ð Eco�괂ĠPesa ð programme ð demonstrated ð in ð these ð Rindings, ð indicate ð that ð complementary ð currencies ð are ð a ð valuable ð tool ð to ð promote ð development, ð warranting ð further ð implementation ð and ð research.
