Synthesis, solid state reactivity and magneto-structural correlations of symmetric diradical diacetylenes

Abstract The two diradical diacetylenes: 2,4-hexadiynilenedioxy bis(2- p -(phenylene)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazolinyl-3-oxyl 1 oxide) and 4,4′-(2,4-hexadiynilenedioxy)bis(α,α-bis(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)-2,6-dichlorobenzyl (hereafter abbreviated as nitronyl nitroxide diacetylene, NNDA, and polychlorotriphenylmethyl diacetylene, PTMDA, diradicals, respectively) have been synthesized, and their magnetic properties studied. The solid state reactivity of both compounds has been examined, and preliminary results concerning with the magnetic behavior of thermally annealed PTMDA and NNDA diradicals, are also presented. In addition, we report the magneto-structural correlation of the monoacetylenic analog of NNDA diradical, 2-( p -(2-propyniloxy)phenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazolinyl-3 oxyl 1-oxide (hereafter called nitronyl nitroxide monoacetylene radical, NNMA).
