Surrogate Formulation optimization of diesel and Biodiesel blends

2020
Surrogate fuel is defined as a fuel composed of a small number of pure compounds whose behavior corresponds to certain characteristics of a target fuel which contains many compounds. The optimized surrogate fuel composition should approximate the essential physical and chemical properties of the real fuel. A mixture of fossil fuels with certain percentage of biofuels is an alternative issue to petroleum depleting. Therefore, the aim of this work is to optimize a surrogate formulation that imitates fossil diesel, biodiesel and blends of fossil diesel with a specific percentage of biodiesel: 5%, 20% and 50%. The target properties used to generate optimized formulations were density, viscosity and cetane number. The results showed a variation of surrogate formulation with the percentage blending with biodiesel and obtained properties were in good agreement with the target ones.
