Anisotropic X-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectra of (001) oriented L1 0 -MnGa film

2015
L1 0 -MnGa is known to exhibit a large perpendicular anisotropy K u ∼ 1.5 × 10 7 erg/cc and a low Gilbert damping constant a ∼ 0.014 [1], which are quite attractive for the applications to future high-density magnetic random access memories and magnetic recording media. Furthermore, magnetic properties of MnGa are modified from ferromagnetic to paramagnetic by a low dose of Kr ion irradiation [2], which is quite useful to develop high-density planer bit patterned media. In spite of the growing concern on the L1 0 -MnGa film, the origin of the large K u of the MnGa is not clearly understood. In this study, we carried out X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements varying the applied field direction, and estimated spin and orbital moments of Mn atoms to discuss the relationship between the large perpendicular anisotropy and electronic structure of the L1 0 -MnGa film.
