The merging of liquid crystal electrooptics with silicon CMOS technology to enable high information content, large screen displays

1998
I describe a new technology which promises to provide displays with unprecedented performance. This new display concept combines the liquid crystal electrooptics familiar in flat panel displays on laptop computers and silicon CMOS technology, with a reflective optical projection system. Very small reflective liquid crystal "light valves" are fabricated on a silicon chip and are then illuminated and optically magnified and projected to provide a large screen, high fidelity image. Products based on this technology are already beginning to appear in the market place.
