Field-sequential-color poly-Si-TFT LCD : Electronic Displays

2001
An FSC (Field-Sequential Color) smectic LCD has been developed using low-temperature poly-Si TFTs. The FSC LCD has high optical efficiency and is low in cost, because it reproduces color images by time division multiplexing without built-in micro color filters. To realize FSC LCD, we use VSLCs (V-shaped-switching Smectic LCs) that have two orders faster response characteristics than conventional LCs. An active-load-type TFT pixel amplifier was developed to drive the VSLCs without voltage fluctuation. Our new pixel configuration is based on a high-gain amplifier, is characterized by high aperture ratio, and is less susceptible to TFT threshold-voltage deviation. With the use of a newly developed scanning LED backlight system, this LCD demonstrated high optical efficiency. The optical response time was 300μs for a field frequency of 180Hz. This LCD is capable of displaying high-quality motion-picture images.
