Creating Narratives through Art as Self-Definition for Black Women

2015
The purpose of this study is to examine ways in which Black female ar/sts have created narra/ves through art as self-‐defini/on. These ar/sts have responded to stereotypical stories and images of Black women by crea/ng self-‐defined stories and images. This study specifically focuses on Faith Ringgold because she has combined narra/ve and visual art in story quilts that present Black women as empowered, mul/dimensional people. The concept of crea/ng narra/ves through art as self-‐defini/on for Black women was further inves/gated through narra/ve inquiry and arts-‐based research. Methods My methods for this study are based on both narra/ve inquiry and arts-‐based research. • Narra/ve Inquiry – “a way of understanding experience...the stories of the experiences that make up people’s lives...stories lived and told.” (Clandinin, 2000, p. 20) • Specific methods will go here • ... • ... • Arts-‐based research – “the systema/c use of the ar/s/c process, the actual making of ar/s/c expressions in all of the different forms of the arts, as a primary way of understanding and examining experience” (McNiff, 2007, p. 29) • Specific methods will go here • ... • ...
