A comparative study on the effect of stress In dental implant structure using Finite element analysis

In this study an effort is made to develop a methodology to compare the implants made of different materials by evaluating the stresses in the dental implant assembly through finite element analysis. The FE model is prepared in par with the guidelines available for the standard tooth implant. The implant materials like, cobalt - chromium alloy, stainless steel, titanium-grade IV were considered in the study for comparison purpose. The variation in deformation and stresses in the cortical bone, cancellous bone and at the implant interface were considered as the measure for comparison. Since, the stress induced in these regions are responsible for the stability and sustainability of the implant, it is observed that, evaluation of the stress concentration and distribution could be the primary decisive factor in the selection of implant material. It is evident from the study that, the distribution of the stresses and strains depends on the structure and the material of the implants. Thus, this work serves the basis for exploring the suitability of materials for the development of dental implant within the considered assumptions. However, a detailed experimental investigation involving fatigue analysis may be required for further validation
