Structural features of liquid metallic glass former

2006
Abstract The structural parameters of Au 75 Si 25 alloy, pure Au, Al 88 Si 12 , Cu 87 Sn 13 , In 98 Al 2 and Al 93 Ni 7 alloys have been measured by X-ray diffractometer. It is found that there are subpeaks in the pair correlation functions in liquid Au 75 Si 25 alloy. The addition of Si in liquid Au results in a decrease in both the correlation radius and the coordination number of the nearest atomic neighbors. The Au 75 Si 25 alloy nearest atomic distance has a more stable dependence on temperature compared to In 98 Al 2 , Al 93 Ni 7 and Cu 87 Sn 13 alloys. The atomic density change of liquid Au 75 Si 25 alloy is less dependent on temperature than the liquid Au and Al 88 Si 12 alloy. The liquid metallic good glass former Au 75 Si 25 alloy possesses a more stable liquid structure than that of poor glass formers, indicating the essential of the fragility of the superheated melts.
