Modified sintered silicon carbide (SiC) materials cover a wide spectrum of different applications. By systematically continuing the tribological optimization of these materials, and using the new possibilities offered by laser structuring, it will also be possible to meet the future demands on bearings and seals, particularly ceramic sliding bearings. Advances in manufacturing technology provide the basis for new sintered SiC components, including parts for the sliding bearing industry, to become suitable for mass production within the next years. However, along with material and manufacturing technology developments, efforts must be intensified on ceramic-optimized designs requiring a close cooperation between ceramic producers and users.
